A Poppy Thank You, And Changes Afoot...

This image is a digital ink and watercolour sketch of a planter of large poppies and the word "Thank You"
"Thank You" Poppy Planter Sketch

Hello there

Hope all is well, safe and happy with you. It is here-but have been so busy, that this thank you (originally created as thanks for some lovely birthday gifts)  has been just about the only new design I can share with you.

But it is also meant as a thanks to you, both for being here, and in advance, for your patience.

Basically, the time has come to move to a better platform for newsletters (so that you don't have to be bothered by any pesky adverts for who-knows-what, for one thing. Many apologies if you've already been affected by this. Please know that change is coming).

However, to get this right, it's going  to take some research, adjustments, and thought. So please bear with me whilst I work this one out.

In the meantime, thanks again for being here. Please feel free to share the image above too, if you find it useful, and have people you'd like to thank (especially online, as I've sized it more for that here...). Note, am hoping that the new solution will make such sharing waaay easier :-).

Take care, and more soon-including some summery tales...

P.S. Update on 13th September 2025: A variation of this image (minus the text) is now available as a print and on all sorts of goodies here.

Thanks So Beary Beary Much Illustration

Image shows watercolour adult and baby bear, and thanks so beary beary much as the message in bright and light-hearted line and wash lettering
Thanks So Beary Beary Much Illustration

Well-what a week.

In so many respects, this has been quite the week. Personally speaking, it's included (broadly, anyway) a birthday, unintentionally elongated celebrations for that (who minds an elongated birthday...yay!)...And some deeply annoying admin stuff that may take up waaaay more time than I'd like over the summer.

All of which is to say, this is why the blog post is a day late, and indeed, why the timing of things may be a little funky generally over the next few weeks. And yet also, why this week gave me so very much for which to be thankful.

The illustration

If you're into the details of how things are made, Sakura Pigma Micron Pens (yup, there's the birthday again) were the starting point, and watercolour markers the finish.

(And yes, am so delighted with these pens *and* the latest of my trusty Daler Rowney sketchbooks that the links to them are of the affiliate kind. (Meaning that I get a small commission if you choose to buy through this link, but totally understand if that's not your thing).

Finally

You're welcome to share (or even click/tap on and download it) if you'd like and there's someone you'd like to thank. Please be sure to keep the watermark if you do though, and be aware that it might be best for internet sharing, and not print resolution. Credit and links back are always appreciated, but never required. (My full "angel" policy on usage here, if you need it).

I'll be popping in as much as possible of the summer. In the meantime, please enjoy yours, and thank you so much, both for being here, and for "bearing" with me :-) .

More soon.

Pink "Bizzie Lizzie" Craft Sheet and Other Goodies

Hello there

Yes, it's January and even though this *really* means that every day is getting lighter (or that you have *summer* in full swing in the Southern Hemisphere) it can still feel in need of some brightening up.

And what better way to do that than with cheerful summer flowers?

Pink Bizzie Lizzie Patterned line and wash watercolour background by Clare Walker.
Grab this craft sheet at Craftsuprint

(By the way, yes, if this design has a familiar feel...you're right. It's a 2023 update/add-on to the "Bizzie-Lizzie Shaped Card available here, now that my pattern design skills are more evolved than they were back then).

What was lovely, and quite unexpected though, was how the pattern turned out to look uplifting and jolly on lots of lovely things over at Redbubble too...

So there you have it. There can be a profusion of pink flowers, even in January, and hope you enjoyed them.

Take care, and more soon.

A Happy Beach Hut Design...

Hello there, and hope you've been having a good week.

Happy line and wash beach huts, in red, white and sea blue, complete with sand and a happy crab and seagull.

Whether or not you're actually beside the seaside as you're reading this, today's post is all about these pretty summer beach huts, and the lovely things that are now carrying this design.

The inspiration for this design was actually British seaside beach huts. But am sure the beach vibe can travel just as far as it needs to and to beaches and lakeshores everywhere.

It turns out that although I came up with idea as a set of three downloadable craft sheets...

The design (and the pattern that came from it) loves to be on lots of fun beachy items too...

Whether you want to use it at the beach, on a tote or drawstring bag, or blanket...

Or just put a bit of beachy vibe into your life every day, whether in a really watery way (like this shower curtain)...

Or a completely different one... This look suits everything it seems, from a desk mat to a mug...

Whatever your preference, thanks for reading down this far, and may some seaside happiness be with you, one way or another.

And All Because I Promised to Send a Postcard...

Hello again, and hope you're well and feeling good.

So, last week's post was ultra-short, and I promised to tell you why.

Basically, I had a birthday (one of the ones that people more numerically-minded than me appear to get more stressed about than I did).

And so much unexpected loveliness got thrown at me (thanks everyone, you know who you are!) that I was (and still am, really) totally out of kilter. (Not complaining in any way, mind you, just saying :-) ).

Just one of the pieces of loveliness was this nifty-looking "paint your own postcards" set.

Photo of a Paint your own postcards set

I would link to it, but can't find it anywhere on the web. Though its makers, Flying Tiger, do seem to make do lots of other and nifty eco-minded products.

How does it work?

The basic premise is that it's a pack containing, *25* postcards. Each postcard sheet is detachable, but-and this is the clever bit-each sheet also comes with a detachable palette of six colours, the paint in the palette being fused to the paper, but easily water-soluble.

Obviously, I was hooked...

Obviously, I was hooked, just on seeing the set (it comes complete with a small flat brush as well). So hooked in fact that (knowing how much fun it was  going to be to play with this) I blithely promised the donors that *of course,* I would send them a thank you postcard very shortly.

In fact, I was planning several thank-you postcards, including for these beauties...(They are so beautiful, and still going strong, well into their second week of crazy-high temperatures...it's amazing).

Photo of a beautiful bunch of purple, pink and white flowers in a vase

After all, in the joy of using fresh supplies, what can *possibly* go wrong? :-)

And so, I sat down to use the paints...

Having learned an absolute ton from the wonderful Lindsay Weirich's art lessons on YouTube, I know that it's really important to "swatch out" the colours in any new art supply or set. This is so that you can see what they actually look like when not in a palette form, and when blended together, using various brushes. And, thanks to Lindsay, that's what I always do.

I soon discovered that, whilst I had a personal preference for using them with  my trusty Pentel Water Brushes (yes, that *is* an affiliate link, they're amazing) the paints themselves were lovely, mixing and granulating to beautiful natural colours, as the swatch card made on the back of the pack cover, shows...

Photo of paints swatched out

Then, came the postcards themselves...

I had already noticed that the surface of the cards was somewhat shiny. "Maybe that's because they have to resist the watercolours enough to survive transit and arrive in one piece, " I reasoned.

The "grams per square metre," measurement ( I think it's  a weight measurement...the upshot is that it lets you know how thick a particular piece of paper is) had already had me wondering too...

At 180 gsm, I wondered if it would withstand the amount of water you need to use to get watercolours to, well, look like watercolour. (Standard watercolour paper, by the way, is usually 300 grams per square metre, or approximately 110 lbs per square inch, I believe, in the USA).

But even that didn't ring too many alarm. Depending on the paper, with an old envelope or silicone mat behind the paper, and gentle water usage, I've  easily got away with180 gsm before...

Except that...

This time, I couldn't get away with it. The colours were lovely, and *such* fun to use... I wanted to see them blend and granulate. Which somehow, they couldn't seem to do without my having to soak the postcards 'til they buckled.

I was always brought up to believe that, " a bad workman always blames his tools,". So am more than happy to admit I was probably doing something wrong, and would be happy to be corrected by anyone with more knowledge of these postcards than I have. I will update this post immediately if that happens.

But the net result was that I ceased to aim for the beautiful and complex vase of flowers...and just about pulled off some roses before the paper buckled completely...

Photo of a pink watercolour rose painting

Which, with a trip through the scanner and some digital cossetting, became the design in "last" week's post (which may or may not get added to again, in its digital form).

But...

I still had that promise to keep, remember. If the watercolours didn't seem to work on these cards (for whatever reason-maybe even the extreme heat here this week) what else might? And, what else might that could itself withstand transit in the post?

I tried pretty much every art supply I own, (heck, that was fun...) and ended up using...the chunky magnetic whiteboard markers we use to add things to the shopping list board each week.

Yes, they are very good for our whiteboard, and hence this is an affiliate link too, but not necessarily a first-choice for postcards...:-) :-) :-).

Finally...

Finally, I was able to send  sent the promised card anyway...

A thank you postcard

And to the people receiving this card, please know that a) I still love the gift, b) it was massive fun to use, c) I now have supplies I know I can wreck (which is true freedom).

And so...

If you're still reading down this far, thank you, and you're amazing. You're now also pretty much up-to-date with everything arty around here (which is more than I am ;-) ).

But some things never change, and so, as ever, have a happy weekend, and...

More soon.

New Design: Cottage Roses

Hope you're doing well, whatever the latest in your corner of the world. This week's post is ultra-short, but there is a happy, happy reason why, I promise.

Just wanted to pop on here and share this pic with you as a quick peek, in preparation for the full story behind it which I'll post in a few days' time.

Digital Watercolour illustraiton of golden July Lettering, with a strawberry on top, and surrounded by daisies and grass. Free to download and use.
Free "July Strawberry," Illustration. Right-click
and save here to download.
Hello there

Hoping you're well and thriving today. And as you can see above, it's time again for a "month illustration" freebie (in this case, the warmth and strawberries of July). Southern hemisphere people, I hear you, and know it isn't summer everywhere. I'm British, and it often isn't summer in July here either :-) . But seriously, if you have a different perception of months and their symbols, please let me know what they are, and I'll see if I can illustrate them for you.

Anyway, how about grabbing this freebie graphic?

So if you'd like to use the "July Strawberry," graphic above  in a project, video or newsletter, go ahead and right-click and save (or click, or tap, depending upon your device) the image above. Links back and credit are always appreciated, but never required.

And if you'd like to let me know how you use it, please do, 'cos 1) I'm curious, and 2) I might be able to feature *your* project in a future blog post.

Even more strawberry-ishness

And on that cute and fragrant note, will leave you for this week. Thanks for dropping by, and have a great weekend.

In the Lavender Garden...

Hello there

Hope you've had a lovely week, and are coping with the heat/cold/other weather oddity (delete as applicable) in your particular part of the world. Here in London, it's seriously warm. So, where better to take you, than a lavender garden?

Lavender fields in digital watercolour by Clare Walker
Click or tap here to see the full version of this design

This is a digital watercolour of mine in Krita, and it's based upon a trip we took to see the Fawcett Garden in Vauxhall.

As you can see from these photos, the garden is smaller than the mythical place in my imagination :-) (isn't that always the way?). But it is beautiful, and we got there at just the right time to see and smell, the lavender. (As ever, the Computer Man and I went together. Most of the photos are his, as he's much niftier with a camera than me).

Happy bees abounded...

And there were roses, too...

As well as a general feeling of "Cottage Garden-ness"...

Which is all the more amazing, when you consider that Vauxhall Park is just a stone's throw from the MI6 building in central London.

The thing I loved best though, is that the park's lavender (which also featured in rows like these)...

is harvested every year, by volunteers, with proceeds from the resulting oil being used to fund the ongoing upkeep of the lavender garden.

You can't beat a situation so full of win-win aspects for everyone, can you?

And on that note, I'll just wish you a happy weekend (or week, depending upon when you're reading this).

And thank you for reading down this far into a long post :-).

A Watercolour Daisy Painting, and Card Design

Watercolour daisiespicked out in negative painting against a watercolour background of turquoise, cobalt, teal and violet.
Click here for more info about this painting

Hello there, and hope you've been having a good week.

I don't know about you, but it's felt like a week for exploring new things (at last-hurrah!).

So I took the time to look into a new watercolour technique, by following this tutorial, by Joanne Boon Thomas.

With grateful and genuine thanks to Joanne (it's a super tutorial), I then proceeded actually to paint something completely different and the watercolour daisies you see above are the result.

Regular readers of BoundingSquirrel will know that I have form in this area: one day I will actually follow the steps outlined in a tutorial, I will, honestly ;-).

Found myself liking that which actually emerged enough to imagine it as a print, though,  and also to turn it into this printable greeting card:

Could proper, pre-2020 levels of mojo be returning? Are you feeling this too, in your neck of the woods?

We shall see, but at least there's something pretty for me to post and you to look at this fine Friday.

Hope you have a lovely weekend, and more soon.

New Digital Painting, in a New Old/Style

Hello there

How are you doing?

If  you're feeling the need for some calm, this week, I've got a peaceful landscape painting for you.

Painting in digital chalks of a peaceful lake scene, with distant hills
"By the Lakeshore", Digital Painting by Clare Walker, BoundingSquirrel.Com

Yes, I painted it  digitally (but still stroke by stroke, in Krita 5). And for those of you into such things, yes, this does use a different brush to my normal set in there: digital soft chalk.

If you've been reading this blog for a *very* long time (and I do mean a very long time, around 9 years or so)... Firstly, *thankyou,* and second, you may remember that I used to do much more in this "digital pastel," style (such as the pics, here, and here, for example).

This new painting just happened out of nowhere, suggesting it was its right time to emerge. (And to answer the next question am guessing you might have, this is entirely from my imagination, and I have no idea at all where, or even if, this place exists quite like this in, "real life").

I have a question for you too though, if that's OK. Do you prefer this style, or the usual pen-and-wash? Or both? I'd love to know, so please do leave me a comment over on Facebook if you've got a view on this.

As to what will become of this painting/drawing (if anything), am not sure yet. If you've any thoughts on that, please let me know that too.

And with all that said, it's time just to thank you for reading this, and to wish you as happy and peaceful a weekend as possible.

More soon.

Yes, Easter would appear to have snuck up on us again, and so before taking a break for it, I just wanted to send you my very best wishes, whatever your way of celebrating  this time of year (or not).

For me, nature and the arrival of new life and hope is always key in spring, hence this image.

If you'd like to share this gif/send it as an online Easter card, please do (right-click, click or tap on the image to download and use it). I don't insist on credit, but it's always lovely if you're able to do so, or link back in some way.

Hope all is peaceful well and happy wherever you are. Have a lovely weekend (or more) and I'll see you in a few days.

Thanks so much for being here, and more soon.

Whimsical Watercolour Painting: Happy Hollyhocks

Hello there, and happy Friday.

Don't know about you, but I couldn't quite let summer go this week. Perhaps because it's been warmer than in the actual summer ;-).

The late heat has also keep summer flowers in bloom. Which was a great chance to capture some happy pink hollyhocks in watercolour/watercolor. There's nothing quite like sploshing around bright, happy colours on a hot day).

I'm loving how these hollyhocks have turned out as prints...

But also that, somehow, they've sneaked onto home décor,

as well as Redbubble's latest and very useful offering...(just about to be released as I type)...deskmats.

That's all from here for now, but hope that some of the happiness and colour from these hollyhocks can make its way to you. Summer's been a long time coming ;-) .

Have a lovely weekend-more soon.

Summer Solstice Illustration

Summer solstice image showing blue sky and see in watercolour and the words Summer Solstice in white ink
Yes, it's finally time for the promised Summer Solstice image I knew I had to post, to balance the Winter Solstice one here (and which you'll probably prefer to share today if you're in the Southern Hemisphere).

Originally, I meant to have the two images "matching" in some way. But it soon became clear this wasn't how this image (in digital watercolour, in Krita) wanted to be. This was a puzzle, until an obvious truth hit home.

The two solstice points in the year are opposites. So it makes sense that the approach, tone and feeling behind each is going to be, well, opposite also.

In any event, feel free to share this jpg image as it is if it's of use to you today, or in illustrating Solstices generally.

Happy Solstice, and more soon.

New Inspiring/Funny Quote Illustration: Life *Is * A Bowl of Cherries. But...

It's cherry season here. Somewhere in the course of the first few this year, I got to thinking the thought, "Even cherries have pips". Which evolved as you see below.

Picture of a fridge magnet with the words, Life is a bowl of cherries. But sometimes you have to spit out the pips, illustrated by a hand-drawn bowl of cherries.

Just a fun thought for a Friday, which you're also welcome to share via the image below if you'd rather.

Announcing New, Easy Hang Wall Art (That Even Helps Nature)

red summer poppies whimsical easy hang wall art

Hello again, and am hoping this post finds you well and thriving.

Let's get down to it...I'm absolutely thrilled to announce that lots of my most popular floral art, like these summer poppies, has been accepted by Displate.Com to be part of their new easy-hang wall-art range.

The concept behind these affordable metal poster size prints is amazing: they hang with magnets, and can be put up in minutes, without damaging your walls. No need for framing or waiting around.

And because they're made of metal, the rich colours of digital art get shown off to great effect.

Best of all, 10 trees are planted for every Displate purchased.

So if you're looking for flowers or floral art to hang easily on your wall, and would love to help nature too, please do head over to my Displate page now.

(And of course, this design is still available for you as an ever-popular printable download, here...)

New Digital Painting: Pink Rambling Rose

Pink rambling roses are in short supply in London in November. Hence this new digital painting of blue sky and a fragrant flower, I guess :-).

Anyway, enjoy, and thank you to the people who have already visited (and *bought from* -you are amazing-I love you!) the new version of my Zazzle store.

Update: 11/2/14: A new version of this picture is featured in the new ebook, "Fall in Love and Stay There", available via all Amazon stores.
