Drink in These Colours-And Their Story...

Now, I do realise that the design in today's post might very much either be to your taste, or not.

But as it's the middle of January, even if a  bright pink crochet effect pattern isn't your thing, I thought you might at least enjoy drinking in the colours...

Every design has its day

Here's a fun fact about this design. The actual motifs in this pattern have been on my hard drive for several years. But I could never see a use for them until that contest (and a big swing in the world towards bright colours) came about.

I guess the comforting moral of that story, if there is is one, is that every dog (or design, in this case) really does have its day.

New Digital Painting: Christmas Cactus

Hello there, and thank you sooo much for letting me in to your inbox at what is (as I type) a busy time of year for most.

In the midst of it all, I thought you might enjoy the vibrancy of this week's new, "Christmas Cactus" painting. It's a digital watercolour created in both Krita and Rebelle, (and took me around four hours to complete, if that kind of thing interests you).

Why a Christmas Cactus?

This picture is also a homage to the most beautiful Christmas cactus (or "Schlumbergera", I believe it can be called, if you prefer fancier plant names) that we used to have at home when I was a child.

Though mid-winter in Britain was every bit as overcast then as now, every year, this riot of cerise/ pink/ purple flowers would erupt from an otherwise fairly unassuming plant in the corner. It's a shade that's still one of my favourite hues (I mean, come on, what'd not to love about bright pink? Especially in winter :-)).

Thinking about it the other day, I couldn't remember what became of the plant itself...but I *could* re-create it, and here we are.

Need a Splash of Colour? Look at These Pink Gerberas...

It should be a truth universally acknowledged that the amount of time taken over a piece of work bears absolutely no relationship whatsoever to how popular and/or useful that item will turn out to be.

I used to think it was just me who often got more attention given to "quick sketches I wasn't thinking about and as just enjoying" than something over which I'd worked for days and tried to get "right".

But asking around other creative friends, it seems quite common that the pieces which felt as if they had the least (conscious) attention often work out best for everyone. Maybe it's the very consciousness in the well-worked art that might lead it to feel a bit...efforted, maybe?

Whatever the reason, this Gerbera sketch in pen and Caran D'Ache watercolour crayons (a fabulous new addition to my stash, BTW, that I'd recommend in a heartbeat if you're looking for new supplies) sadly, took less than an hour, and has led to all sorts of goodies (see below).

I say "sadly", because that was one of the most fun, joyous and colourful," not-quite-an-hour's" of art-making that I've had in weeks.

Anyway, as can appreciate you probably haven't got all day onto the goodies. That initial sketch (and its follow-up work, of course :-) gave birth to:

New Digital Watercolour: Whimsical Pink Clematis

This is a new digital watercolour painting of a clematis flower. I actually took one of the reference photos for it nearly five years ago...and can only now even begin to feel I'm doing it justice.

Back then, the best I could do was some arty processing of the photo.

These days, this is a proper stroke-by-stroke digital watercolour (with the graphics pen and ArtRage 4, as you might guess.)

And if you weren't expecting a post after the end of the challenge on Friday...well...I *did* take a couple of days off. And I still won't necessarily post every day. But I missed this so much, just had to get back to it.

Daily Illustration #93: Rose Floral Chintz Pattern

Can't get over how different this floral pattern is from the original Day 91 picture I reassembled into pattern motifs, as discussed here.

It took so long, and having added in extra bits, it might actually have been quicker to re-draw just the motifs from scratch. But that's another story.

I'm loving how this pattern turned out, especially on laptop skins and many other things available here.

New Digital Painting: Pink Rambling Rose

Pink rambling roses are in short supply in London in November. Hence this new digital painting of blue sky and a fragrant flower, I guess :-).

New Digital Painting: Open Purple Tulip

This week's digital painting is an open pinky-purple tulip...based on another photos from our Bank Holiday day in the park. When  the sun was shining. (I'll now stop doing the British "weather obsession" thing).

Again, it's in Pixarra Twisted Brush's digital oil pastels...I'm having so much fun with those that these flowers might even turn into a series.Anyway, this one's now available to buy as a print or card here.

In the meantime, this is just a short post as there is is a lot going on-which I'll share with you as soon as I can. And there's lots of other great stuff to share from my travels round the web as well.

New Digital Painting: Tulip Fever

At last... a new digital painting. This image on the left is the low-resolution version of "Tulip Fever" but I hope you get the general idea.

This is another digital oil pastel painting from scratch with the marvellous Twisted Brush program.
