Hello there.

Hope you're well in these crazy times. Am just dropping in to show you a colourful work-in-progress peek of the  images I've drawn and painted so far for a new collection. And yes, they're hand drawn and water-coloured. (For those who like to know, I used Sakura micron black pens, and a combination of Innktense and my new Viviva watercolours, on hot pressed watercolour paper).

I'd hoped to have the collection (and indeed, all the site changes) ready this week. But in the scale of things, these are such minor issues that I count myself totally lucky instead to be able to work on lovely things...and ask you to tune in next week, to see everything that they've become and are becoming...

In the meantime, thanks so much for being here, and enjoy the colours, the flowers, and another breath of spring.

Introducing...The Springtime Garden Collection

Lots and Lots of Forget-Me-Nots...And a Quiz...

If you're in the mood for something completely different today, you're in luck. 

During the past few days I've been experimenting with drawing and painting forget-me-not floral motifs in various media. This has left me with lots and lots of images of forget-me-not flowers.

So, just for a change, I thought it might be fun to set a quiz. Participation is entirely optional, and totally  for the fun of it only. I'll give the answers in next week's newsletter post.

An Accidental Series of Watercolours...

New Christmas watercolours ready
 to become gift tags... 

Hello there

It's a busy time of year for many, so this will be a quick post.

Just wanted to share these cute little watercolours with you before they go on their way as gift tags. Painting them helped me feel a ton more festive, so hope they can do the same for you, if you're feeling the need for that. 

And, it seems, I was soooo focused during the painting of them that I *completely* failed even  to notice a squally storm outside the window, (even though I have *really* good hearing). According to the Computer Man,  the sudden storm had been howling and rattling at our front and back windows. And I completely believe him, but share this as a happy tale of the power of art to transport a person completely into their own happiest world.

When I'd finished I didn't just learn about the storm...But I also realised that a milestone I've been "trying" to achieve for ages (creating a proper series of traditionally painted watercolours) had come about effortlessly...because I'd just been thinking of them as "gift tags".

Next week

Here's Some Pink Cosmo Goodness...

In the midst of everything else of much greater importance in the world, if you want to relax, take a breath, and look at something pretty for a moment, there at least, I might be able to help.

The picture you see above is a sketch, based on pink cosmo flowers at Capel Manor (yes, from our trip the other week, and captured in a new, handmade-paper-and-as-far-as-I-know-vegan Artway Indigo journal/sketchbook, to which I treated myself last week.

Hope all's well and thriving in your corner of the world. And speaking of "world", it now being July (How? Already?!) it's World Watercolour Month, 2025.

What is "World Watercolour Month?

The idea behind World Watercolour Month is that it's a low-pressure challenge, involving optional daily prompts (usually meaning that people need to draw something random, and interestingly-outside-normal-comfort-zones).

This year, I decided at least to start off with the prompts, but to ease the pressure on myself in what is nearly-always a hyper-busy month in this house, by doing tiny two inch square sketches, and batching my uploads somewhat. This also has the happy result that innocent onlookers  don't get deluged with disparate images day after day.

But if you'd like to know more about World Watercolour Month,  as well as seeing *lots* more art from some great people, all the details are here.

Update, and New Cartoon for Birders and Nature Lovers

It's been a while, so thank you for bearing with me, and hope all is well with you.

If you remember, in my previous post, I'd solved the "Why and the how," of my seemingly ever-lasting re-set.

Well, now the what (or at least some of it) has arrived too. Drumroll...

The cartoons are coming back... 

A realisation

You see, I had a realisation whilst I was doing this birthday cartoon for a friend...

That I really, really, really...still like doing cartoons....Drawing quickly, having lots of ideas, (and hopefully) helping people to have more fun and more laughter.

Making it happen

"So...", you might be thinking, "Where can I see all these wondrous cartoons?"

To which my honest answer at the moment (apart from my CartoonsbyClare Zazzle store, that is :-), is,

 "Um...mostly still on my hard drive..."

This is because I've done a large chunk of  them for fun, friends and family, up to this point.

And also because, though the more serene image of a "might-soon-be-used-avatar," for the cartoons looks like this...

The reality of the situation whilst in the throes of making it happen, tends to look more like this...

 In other words, I still have to solve the final "Where?" piece of the puzzle properly. (*And * be sure that the downloads already in my Craftsuprint shop continue too).

But it is coming, and I'm even more on the case than a luggage tag.

So, in the gentle expectation that the next post will be along quicker than this one...Thanks ever so much for sticking around and reading down this far, and I'll just say...

A Realisation...(And Some Watercolour Bluebells)

Sometimes...The World Needs More Whimsy...

Hello there

Hope you've been well and thriving these past few...interesting...weeks. 

Here, the hiatus isn't really quite over...but I wanted pop back to assure that am still here, and on the case with Where the Blog is Going and everything.

The Why, and the How

Keeping this brief (and believe me, that's a tough one...) after letting it all be for a while, and getting back to drawing, painting and writing just for fun... The most obvious point hit me... I'd lost the sense of why I'm creating anything in the first place, never mind just the blog.

Luckily, it just took the merest peek around the world to remember why. As the bluebells at the top of post say, "Sometimes the world needs more whimsy." And that, I can share with you naturally, and as easily as breathing. (The dictionary  definition of "whimsy" is apparently, "Unusual funny and pleasant ideas or qualities", by the way, if you're into that sort of thing). Maybe even, if you're up for it, and whisper this softly...joy...

The "how" also fell into place after that. Try as I might (and gosh, did I try) everything I draw, make or design make comes back to line and wash watercolour, just like those bluebells. It's a fun, whimsical and joyful medium though, so I guess it fits in pretty well. ;-).

The What and the Where

Which just leaves the "What" and the "Where,". So, as I said, the hiatus isn't really over, and it might be a little while before I post again. 

(And if you have any ideas about the "What and the Where" of the way forward-please let me know on Instagram, where I'm planning to get back to a very gentle posting routine again).

In the meantime thanks so much for being here. Stay happy, sane, and (if you want to)...whimsical.

Hello there

Well, this image says it all, really. Here in London, it actually feels like spring (well, for this week, anyway :-). And so, in place of my planned post, I thought I'd share the joy of this cute rabbit... Tap or click on the image, or here, if you'd like to do the same.

The story here...

The story is simple. Earlier today, I was about to start on the planned post, when I had an irresistible urge to enjoy the sunshine...And then to take out my sketchbook...And half an hour or so later, (time may have warped a little as I sketched ;-),  this cute bunny  had appeared. 

Amazingly, though utterly unplanned, this rabbit is also  just in time for the Spring Equinox, which is on March 20th this year, I believe.

So you get to have this little cutie, at pretty much the same time as me. Which means I haven't had chance to "do anything with" this image yet (though will post links if and when that happens).

Previous rabbits and bunnies...

If you've been here a while though, you'll know that plenty of cute rabbits and bunnies have appeared in this blog over the years already. Such as the ones in Easter sheets and kit available here and here.

A Tale of Two Watercolours

And...breathe...

Don't know how it feels to you, but things are a tad intense out there right now.

Which led me, this week, to breathe as deeply as I could, and go back to basics. If it feels right, this is your invitation to do so too, as I show and tell you, the tale of two watercolours... 

Watercolour One: Stripey Purple Crocuses

Whenever life feels like it is spinning too fast, I'm learning just to breathe, and return, to  inspiration in the strangest of places...Revelling in the simple joy of putting pen to paper (or, in the case of the crocus below, digital pen to tablet).

I'd like to say that I felt inspired to create these crocus (or is it crocuses?) by a major event. I'd like to, but I can't.

 No, strangely, even in a week in which I received the most magnificent bunch of flowers from the dearest of friends (I mean, how lovely are these, and how lucky was I?)...

the flowers which caught my eye with that indescribable whisper of, "Paint us now, please," were some brave little crocuses, pushing their way through the mud, in weak rays of "almost spring," sunshine.

And they led, in double quick time, to the purple crocus picture you've already see. Which is already making its way into several places, to which I'll link when done. (Update on March 15th 2025: for starters,  they're here on wrapping paper).

Watercolour Two: Daffodils and Narcissi

As for the daffodils, they were gorgeous. And The Computer Man and I both enjoyed looking at them *so* much in our house for a full week. And yet, in three attempts, (one digital and two with pens and brushes) I'm only just now getting even close to capturing something about them that feels resonant, and has that "aha," or, "yes" moment (as you can see in this scan  from my sketchbook, below).

Finally...

This tale doesn't have answers. I have no idea as to why one item should be easier to draw in any given week than another. (I've drawn both flowers in the past, in various amounts of complexity. Eg here, and here.)

But the lesson I'm taking from this tale is that following small joys, however strange or illogical it seems to be, strangely. yields the easiest path forward, at least for me, at the moment. 

And if that (and/or just the chance to sit down, breathe, and stare at some flowers) has in any way made everything seem a little less full-on for you too, then this post will have done its job.

Spring Watercolour Flowers (and Favourite Line and Wash Tools)

These are from imagination, but  you never know-if everyone thinks of them enough, they might appear "for real," soon...

Line and Wash Watercolour Paints, Tools and Supplies

If you're the kind of person who likes to know how things are made, I used my current go-to favourite supplies for physical watercolour: a waterproof Sakura Pigma Micron black pen (size 0.1, though from a set with several), Derwent Inktense paints from the 24 half-pan set, Pentel water brushes, and my latest trusty Daler-Rowney sketchbook... the third one in a row, and am planning to buy another one soon...

And yes, all of those links (and in the pic below) *are* affiliate links, because I really do turn to them whenever I want to draw a non-digital watercolour, and also do sometimes get asked about my tools and materials. So, just to be really clear,  if you buy via these links, I get a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

The Derwent Inktense paints were actually a lovely Christmas gift (thank you Computer Man!). (And yes, I really have meant to talk about materials for that long...)

Anyway...here's a pic of them when the set was newer, and much less paint-spattered than it is now...(Note, the set had already been in immediate and delighted use, so even this pic doesn't show the paints in their initially, pristine state...:-) ).

These Derwent Inktense Paints got put to such immediate
use that an initial "pristine," photo of them never got chance to exist...

Sidenote: As far as I know, all these products are animal-friendly too (being a life-long vegetarian, it just isn't in me knowingly to use something that harmed either an animal or the environment in its production). But don't quote me on this, as I'm just a concerned consumer doing her best, not a paint and materials expert.

Hello there, and I hope any holidays you've had/are still having have been exactly how you needed them to be.

Ours were not at all as we'd planned, as not long after I'd scheduled the previous post, we learnt that my father-in-law, Mike had died. He was a good soul, whose quiet, calm presence, dry sense of humour and endless patience will be much missed.

But...

But having said that, he was also, until his last years at least, a good and enthusiastic photographer and card designer himself. So Mike, with huge thanks to all your support of my artistic (and other!) efforts, and appreciation of the details that make a difference...this image is dedicated to you, with lots of love.

And yes, it's a bright image, because even though Mike himself was on the quieter side, he never missed a chance to appreciate (and often photograph) colour in nature. Some of my best memories of him involve going round various gardens, and us  noticing, talking about and photographing plants, including the exotic ones at Kew Gardens.

This flower also feels like a symbol of hope for the future, which is what I'm sure he'd want us all to have.

 Please bear with me over the next few weeks, as blog postings may have different timings and frequency until the end of January.

And if you're new to the blog-welcome-and I promise that 99% of my posts are much more uplifting than this one.

On that note, let's all make it a Happy New Year, no matter what.

In other words, I love the idea that they just *might* be  "fairy doors" ;-) .

Roses, Lilies, and Christmas in July...

Just popping in quickly, as know that lots of people are busy with all things summer right now.

"Roses and Lilies"

Firstly, thought you'd enjoy this sketch of roses and lilies. It came from some flowers that *felt* like they flew in through magical means.

 Yes, OK, though unexpected, these flowers arrived by a very human-and kind-route outside our door. But still, it felt pretty magical on a wet Saturday afternoon. (Especially as I had just been thinking..."It's a shame my birthday flowers are finishing...and I need something new to paint...," but hadn't shared that thought with *anyone*.).

And just in case you're thinking, "No vase would match flowers like that," here is a photo of the flowers on the day they went into the jug (please excuse the dust-art comes first!):

(Confession: I'd been waiting *30 years* since buying that vase for some flowers to come along that would match it quite as well as that ;-) ).

Christmas in July

And yes, though the festive red, white and green did catch my eye, though for later in the year.

Painting and Drawing Methods Used

Which of these methods do you think matches which picture? (You may have to scroll up  from here to see the pictures again).

Method A One of the pictures in this post was created using 100% digital watercolour painting and digital ink sketching,  in the wonderful Rebelle 5 app, (not an affiliate link, I just enjoy using it).

Method B One of the pictures was created by wetting hot-pressed, (ie smooth) 300g Bockingford Watercolour paper, splashing colours into wet areas, and then, when the areas were dry, inking in details with a black waterproof pen.

Method C One of the pictures in this post was created by sketching onto 300g cold-pressed Bockingford Watercolour Paper first, and then painting in details wet-on-dry (though white highlights were still added later).

Please note, this quiz is just for fun, there are no prizes, and the answers are at the very bottom of this post, in the P.S. section.

Whilst I'm in the business of making sure that there's enough text here to obscure the answers, this is probably a great point to remind you that my Redbubble shop is still a great place to look for gifts (most still in time for Christmas, or of course, any other time of year), and that  the printable designs in my Craftsuprint shop can be downloaded 365 days a year.

A P.S with the quiz answers...

And the answers are:

Picture 1 was painted using method B. The surface is smooth (ie hot pressed) and the end result has a pretty sploshy wet-in-wet look.

Picture 2 was painted using method A, and is therefore, 100% digitally painted, (even though the digital paper behind it has a really convincing rougher/"cold-pressed paper" look).

Which means that Picture 3 used method C, with its rougher paper and penwork that am feeling now might have been a little over-the-top :-) .

A New Thistle Painting and Card Front...

Hello there, and hope all is safe and well wherever you are when you're reading this.

It turns out that thistles (yup, those spiky plants) are deeply satisfying to draw, and come in the prettiest shades of purple and sage green, too.

The original digital watercolour was hand drawn and painted with a graphics pen.

And swiftly found its way into being a great card front for St Andrew's day, thistle-themed weddings, and all things Scottish.

Celebrating Pink Lilies and More...

Hello there, and hope all is well and thriving in your world, despite these crazy times.

In these parts, the week saw plenty to celebrate. I'd like to say that the biggest celebration was getting the card kit completed for the yummy pink lilies you see in the picture above. And, to be fair, I am a little bit in love with the kit, the watercolouring of pink flowers being one of my favourite things in life. 

Am also happy that have  managed to jam in verses, a background, loads of layers and a gift tag, as well as the main card, into the kit and still keep it a manageable size for you to download.

The kit has its origins in a private ecard, which am relieved to know the recipient loved. So it felt only right to offer it on a bigger basis to you as well.

But, there was *rain*

Yeah, I'd *like* to say that all of that was the biggest thing we celebrated this week, but that wouldn't strictly be true. Because, (drum roll) we had *rain* here, people. After seven weeks without any meaningful rain (which normally just doesn't happen in the UK) we've had three days of proper rain here.

I would include a picture here of my face as I stuck my head  out into the rain to enjoy it, honestly I would. It just felt like pure joy...a primal moment, when the force of the heat giving way to the rain. I wish the same for you with all speed, if that's what you're needing in your part of the world too.

I *would* include such a picture, but luckily, none were taken ;-). However, I can include a picture of our resident snail, who hadn' t budged from his post on our window frame for two months...until stretching out luxuriantly yesterday...

And for anyone not into snails, can I report that they may have been given a bad press? Despite having not eaten or budged for eight weeks, the snail in this picture had a first meal of *dead* leaves, not green ones...And continues to prefer dead leaves to green ones, as far as we can tell. 

But...

But I grant you, it *is* a long way from snails to luscious pink lilies. So I'll leave you with a picture of the full, "Pink Lilies" downloadable  kit (which you can read more about and buy by clicking or tapping on this link).
