On Autumn Leaves, Creative Block, and Staying In the Moment...

Image shows a line and wash watercolour painting of 9 autumnal leaves at the end of a branch, set against blue sky.

Hello again

This week, I learnt an important lesson. Not a comfortable one, and certainly not a convenient one. But a really important one in relation to feeling a deeper sense of  inner peace.

Am sharing it here because I deeply suspect that I'm not the only person to whom this might apply. Especially in the design or creative industries, but maybe many others, such as retail.

It went like this...

You may remember that last week's post ended up simply showing you winter "work in progress". ( In it, I was basically just confessing to not being able to draw very much).

For days, I attempted to get "all my Christmas designs" ready. In October, when in London in 2023, the trees were still green and barely thinking about autumn, let alone Christmas.

I told myself,,,

"It's the state of the world," I told myself. (And yes, let's face it, that is just...words fail me, let's not even go there right now, in a blog that aims to help you look at happy things every week).

The state of the world in general, we can all only control together. But as to the state of our inner world, luckily, that's a different issue. (Before I discovered art, I was a life coach for 14 years...seems it's still in there, somewhere :-)).

So I started hunting for the thoughts *really* causing this problem.

And whilst I was doing that, the first really autumnal leaves appeared in London. Which led, without stress, and pretty much instantly, to the quick sketch above of a bush possibly too vibrant to hail from the UK.

And to at least two of the poor animals from last week's post suddenly found their perfect, autumnal, rather than winter, homes.

Squirrel in his autumnal wreath for the inside of cards (or as a card, if you'd rather).

Picture is a watercolour image of an autumnal leaves wreath, with a cute gray squirrel with a bushy tail in the bottom of it.

And sleepy fox, making the perfect fox-shaped card for any time of year. (With luck, links to these as  cute printables will be up by the time you read this).

So then it hit me:

Out-of-season designing *is* my real problem.

One of my greatest joys is seeing the seasons change, observing and above all,  *feeling* how things are right now, and expressing that in art and/or words.

And yet, somehow, I'd let myself get trapped in the, "always-got-to-have-things-ready-in-advance," hamster wheel.

It's a wheel that seems to work for many, and if that's so, I salute those people.

But what if, like me, you prefer to respond more spontaneously and in-the-moment. In the "slow living", manner I discovered here, and then promptly lost again?

What to do instead?

I don't have a definitive answer to that. But it feels like, the only way to get off the whole "out-of-season," wheel/treadmill...is just to get off it.

Which may well mean, for example, that this blog turns more into an illustrated journal, than a preview of upcoming designs.

We shall see. But I wanted to share this with you, to give you, as a reader, a heads-up about likely changes...And, if your someone who prefers to respond in the moment too, to let you know that you're not alone.

Let's make this change towards more sane, and in-the-moment living together, if you like.

But in any event, have the very best week you can, and thank you *so* much for reading down this far.

More soon.

An "Autumn Bounty" Thank You Design...

A picture showin how the "Autumn bounty card would look made up as a thank you card. The card features a watercolour leaf arragement on the front, and rich autumnal reds, golds and oranges.

Hello there and hope you've had a good week.

I'm posting this later than I'd like, for reasons to do with minor home improvements that *finally* finished today and will leave us better-prepared for winter...Yay!

So there was time after all for this week's card sheets, which are perfect for this season, and all designed on the theme of rich autumn or fall colours, autumnal bounty, falling leaves, and the idea of thanks and thankfulness. (They should all be available in my Craftsuprint shop by the time you read this).

Because, whatever is going on in the world at large, it would be pretty difficult to feel anything but thankful for some of the beautiful, golden-washed scenes the Computer Man and I have been lucky enough to enjoy and capture this year...and whose colours were a *big* inspiration behind today's sheets.

Like this shot of a pergola in Southwark Park...

Or the changing colours in the lesser-known little gem that is Downhills Park...

We've been so spectacularly lucky with the conditions this autumn, that even our neighbour's rosebush has come over the wall and got in on the act. (Who knew that roses could make an *autumnal* spectacle too?...Maybe everyone but me ;-) )...

I guess the point is, whatever's going on in this particularly crazy world in which we seem to be living right now, beauty and nature are constants, and whatever else is also true, I'm so, so, grateful for that colour, beauty and joy.

Free Christmas Printable/ Clip Art Motifs (Day 81/100)

Hi all. Following on from yesterday's post, the motifs now have colour. But as am not sure yet (mostly owing to the time of year) whether will use them in a pattern, can be certain, they'll make great Christmas printables/clip art for your projects.

Just right-click, click or tap (depending on your device) and save and you can use them in your projects in all the (many, many) ways set out in my "angel" policy for crafters, small business and personal-educational users.

Have fun with this-more tomorrow.

P.S. Update: for an example of how they can be used (and another free Christmas printable) click here.

New Rose Painting & Free Printable: Love, Peace & Justice

This rose painting was originally going to be something very different. However, in the light of everything going on, it turned into a statement of belief about the way in which all people, everywhere, deserve to be treated and viewed, simply because they are people.

If these values resonate with you, please feel free to download, share and print this image as you need.
(You can also find it on various physical items here).

Sending love to you with this, wherever you are. x

Need a Splash of Colour? Look at These Pink Gerberas...

It should be a truth universally acknowledged that the amount of time taken over a piece of work bears absolutely no relationship whatsoever to how popular and/or useful that item will turn out to be.

I used to think it was just me who often got more attention given to "quick sketches I wasn't thinking about and as just enjoying" than something over which I'd worked for days and tried to get "right".

But asking around other creative friends, it seems quite common that the pieces which felt as if they had the least (conscious) attention often work out best for everyone. Maybe it's the very consciousness in the well-worked art that might lead it to feel a bit...efforted, maybe?

Whatever the reason, this Gerbera sketch in pen and Caran D'Ache watercolour crayons (a fabulous new addition to my stash, BTW, that I'd recommend in a heartbeat if you're looking for new supplies) sadly, took less than an hour, and has led to all sorts of goodies (see below).

I say "sadly", because that was one of the most fun, joyous and colourful," not-quite-an-hour's" of art-making that I've had in weeks.

Anyway, as can appreciate you probably haven't got all day onto the goodies. That initial sketch (and its follow-up work, of course :-) gave birth to:

A full collection of household gifts and goodies in scrumptiously saturated deep pink:

about which you can find out more, here.

And if you're more of a "DIY" kind of person, there's also fabric at Zazzle (in the USA)

and WovenMonkey (UK),

And last but not at all least...a five page kit of printable joy at Craftsuprint.Com.

Enjoy this however you want-and thanks for dropping by.

More soon.

New Fuschia Design...And A Tale of Two Graphics...

Hello there, and if you happen to be reading this as it's published-first *thank you*, and even more importantly, a happy new year to you.

I hope the holiday period treated you well. Just for once, I almost took an entire fortnight off over Christmas. I say almost, because, well, art is fun, as well as work, and the idea of summer fuchsias took hold. One thing led to another, and then this little sketch...

mysteriously turned into this...

(with more pictures of everything looking yummy here).

(And if you're more into printables than décor patterns, you might want to look here too).

But apart from that, honestly, we concentrated on relaxing, and am genuinely and gently getting back to speed.

It's good to be back-more soon.
