New Painting: Young Badger in The Bluebells

Hello there

This week, I'm hugely excited. At last, I can finally reveal "Young Badger in the Bluebells," and his very special destiny, in full.

This little badger, getting up to all sorts of mischief amongst the spring bluebells, is going to be a lot in the Badger Trust's online Brocktober auction, beginning on October 2nd 2026.

Let me tell you why this is so exciting and unusual...

More about the painting

As well as being cute as a button, this is an original watercolour and mixed media painting (approximately 6x8 inches, originally, now also mounted).

The item itself has a Clare L Walker signature in the bottom left-hand corner. Obviously, it doesn't have a BoundingSquirrel watermark on it-that's just to keep the image safe online.

Speaking of online, I freely admit that this picture does *not* do the badger justice. He's much cuter in real life. That might come across a bit better in the video I took when he was being parcelled up...

If you're interested in bidding, I should also mention that this is unusual simply because its an original.

If you're here often you'll know that you'll more usually, my illustrations and paintings become print-on-demand prints and surface designs, rather than ever being sold as originals, let alone auctioned.

(All the parcelling up and ensuring safe transit etc usually puts me off sending or selling originals anywhere). 

But nature is the source of my inspiration, and badgers need help.  So I decided to make this exception.

More about badgers

If you're reading this from outside the UK (as I know many people do) I should probably also give you a little intro to badgers themselves. They are ancient animals, who have been part of the British landscape for thousands of years. They live in inherited family tunnel-systems called setts, are so fastidious that they even change their own bedding, and generally do good in the landscape as they root around for worms and beetles.

In other words, they're much gentler than some types of animal with a similar name  (eg honey badgers) found elsewhere in the world.

However...

For reasons I can't really fathom, and despite apparently in-depth studies saying otherwise, they are also blamed for problems in cattle and subjected to persecution. Rather than mix up all that with an art blog, you can read all about it (and watch some hugely cute badger videos)  straight from a better info source: Badger Trust itself.

What I love most though,  is that by donating this painting to the auction, I'm actually able to do something to help them.

And by bidding on this badger painting when the auction goes live, you'll be able to as well.

A Bit Of Peacock Alchemy...

Hello there 

Hope all's well with you (and that you're surviving the heat, if you have it in your part of the world too).

Here, the woozy heat has had me physically art journaling instead of tied to tech.

Believe it or not, this piece began its life as a serious of black, dark grey and indigo blobs. (They were  result of an online workshop with the warm and wonderful artist and facilitator Elizabeth Foley. Huge thanks, Elizabeth).

I guess, after the workshop, some would have left the blobs as a memorial to the friend they were grieving.

But, I just...couldn't. It seems it simply isn't in me to leave things looking dark or broken, when there's even a possibility that they might, somehow, be transformed.

Somewhere in the blobs, I thought I could see a peacock. Bearing in mind that I never usually work this way at all, turning those blobs in a peacock felt ultra-transformative...Liberating and lightening, all in one go. And I love the resulting peacock with all my heart.

Given that the friend whose grief precipitated this was himself a force for transformation, joy, and the uplifting of others, I hope that he'd approve too. (And yes, I sent the peacock to his equally wonderful and amazing wife first, before even posting here).

Here's to healing and transformation for everyone, and everything feeling in need of it.

Lots of Blossoming, and a Sale...

It's Time to Blossom...

Despite everything going on in the world, here, we're lucky enough to be experiencing all the joy, and the feeling of unstoppable blossoming, that the spring brings with it. So, I just had to capture that in a digital watercolour in Krita (the result of which is above).

Not even just blossom...

It isn't just blossom. During my time off, there were sooo many parks and gardens that suddenly seemed full of flowers, sunshine and hope, as if the world had gone from grey to colour in just days.

Here's a selection of the gorgeous spring inspiration that we (well, OK, mostly The Computer Man) managed to photograph since I was last writing to you...(I love the sleeping duck, too...)

There's also been joy and blossoming of a different kind here, as a family member has received so much benefit from this course for adults who stammer that they participated in a live story-telling event this week, in front of 150 people.

(And yes, you're right. This is waaaay off-topic for an art blog. But I very much wanted to give a shout-out to such an important resource, in the hope that it can benefit others as well).

New Idea: Customise My Spring Floral Design...

This week, I'm both keeping a promise I made last week, and showing you something new.

To keep the promise first, the floral wrapping paper/giftwrap you see above with its uses from presents to crafts and more in the photo collage above, is the first design to have come from all that watercolour work-in-progress last week.

If you love the new design just the way it is, you can find it here, as normal.

This time though, *you* can change it...

The stand out thing  and new thing about the way I've designed this is that, if you want to, you can change it, right in the Zazzle editor.

So, if you'd rather have, for example,  a more dramatic background...

Or just a subtle pale grey one instead of white...

You can even alter the colour and effect of the pattern itself, turning it, for instance, into a greyscale, more  monochrome design, if you want...

How is all this possible?

All the magic can happen so easily because of the Zazzle site's amazingly flexible new design editor. I'm happy to record a full tutorial on this if you'd like. For now though, please know that the basic steps are:

1. Visit the product page.

The editing button on the product page...

2. Click on the edit button (circled in green in the picture above).

3. For changing the background, you're working with the background layer...

4. And for changing the effects, you'll click the main image artboard, to bring up the effects menu (again, circled in green below). The effects tool then gives you all the ways in which you can change colour tones and effects.

5. Save your changes and checkout as normal.

It's long been a dream of mine to give you more ways in which you can customise my designs and make them your own.  So this is, at last, at least a small way that I've been able to start achieving that. I hope you enjoy this, and that it's helpful.

Hyacinths and Vases in Watercolour-Work-In-Progress

Hello there.

Hope you're well in these crazy times. Am just dropping in to show you a colourful work-in-progress peek of the  images I've drawn and painted so far for a new collection. And yes, they're hand drawn and water-coloured. (For those who like to know, I used Sakura micron black pens, and a combination of Innktense and my new Viviva watercolours, on hot pressed watercolour paper).

I'd hoped to have the collection (and indeed, all the site changes) ready this week. But in the scale of things, these are such minor issues that I count myself totally lucky instead to be able to work on lovely things...and ask you to tune in next week, to see everything that they've become and are becoming...

In the meantime, thanks so much for being here, and enjoy the colours, the flowers, and another breath of spring.

An Accidental Series of Watercolours...

New Christmas watercolours ready
 to become gift tags... 

Hello there

It's a busy time of year for many, so this will be a quick post.

Just wanted to share these cute little watercolours with you before they go on their way as gift tags. Painting them helped me feel a ton more festive, so hope they can do the same for you, if you're feeling the need for that. 

And, it seems, I was soooo focused during the painting of them that I *completely* failed even  to notice a squally storm outside the window, (even though I have *really* good hearing). According to the Computer Man,  the sudden storm had been howling and rattling at our front and back windows. And I completely believe him, but share this as a happy tale of the power of art to transport a person completely into their own happiest world.

When I'd finished I didn't just learn about the storm...But I also realised that a milestone I've been "trying" to achieve for ages (creating a proper series of traditionally painted watercolours) had come about effortlessly...because I'd just been thinking of them as "gift tags".

Next week

As ever, I hope life is treating you well, whether it's autumn, spring, or neither of those seasons making their way into your corner of the world at the moment. 

Here it is autumn, complete with cool winds, and a sudden need for soups and stews.  And although our neighbour's silver tree hasn't quite reached the stage you see in the picture above yet, I have so many memories, photographs and previous attempts to draw upon, the time just felt right to give this another go. The result has made its way into my collection of images for sale at Pixels.Com.

A little bit more info about my art on Pixels/Fine Art America

In a previous post, I did the best I could to explain why most of my images will be there as we move forward. As a result of that, lots of questions have been asked, so I'll do my best to answer them here.

1. No, not all my previous art is there (yet). But if you like a specific picture from the past, you can ask me to put it up there, (eg with my new contact form). This is what someone did this week for my "Nasturtiums," which are now also available on Pixels:

2. Yes, my designs are available on other items as well as prints, eg stickers, greeting cards and even jigsaws...

But please be aware that not all items may be manufactured locally to you (there is a map here which explains this point better than I can).

3. Yes, you can change the currency to one more local to you if your device isn't showing the one you need. Just scroll right down to the bottom of any page of Pixels/Fine Art America to where it says "Location Settings".

4. The site with my designs on it is hosted, run and administered by Pixels,Com/Fine Art America. (If  I were to run anything myself, nothing would ever get painted). But it is one of the few ways in which I can display a clear collection of my own items to you, whilst still being paid royalties when items sell, and not having my items jumbled with everyone else's (something people have talked about a lot, in the past).

5. Despite it not being my shop (and therefore, my not having much control over anything except wall-art prices), I still keep being asked questions. I've done my best to answer them here. But the real people who can answer them better are probably the Pixels/Fine Art America team, whose contact page is here.

New Painting: Turning the Corner

This came about very quickly, to capture a golden September moment in the park, when vibrant flowers were still bursting through railings (all the brighter after rain)...And the sun seemed ever brighter just around the corner (hence the title: "Turning the Corner").

That "just moving in feeling,"

 

Truthfully, I still have that "just moving in feeling," in relation to the shop.

But my aim is (finally!) to have all my designs for sale in one place (as people have asked me to do many times. This will give a lot more time for actually making art (yay!) whilst also  making life 50 times easier for you and other lovely people actually to find designs you like.

There'll be much more on this in the weeks and months ahead. But for now, it's all going well. And have just discovered that yes, I *can* still offer you greeting cards designed specifically for that purpose, but based on a particular painting.

A Realisation...(And Some Watercolour Bluebells)

Sometimes...The World Needs More Whimsy...

Hope you've been well and thriving these past few...interesting...weeks. 

Here, the hiatus isn't really quite over...but I wanted pop back to assure that am still here, and on the case with Where the Blog is Going and everything.

The Why, and the How

Keeping this brief (and believe me, that's a tough one...) after letting it all be for a while, and getting back to drawing, painting and writing just for fun... The most obvious point hit me... I'd lost the sense of why I'm creating anything in the first place, never mind just the blog.

Luckily, it just took the merest peek around the world to remember why. As the bluebells at the top of post say, "Sometimes the world needs more whimsy." And that, I can share with you naturally, and as easily as breathing. (The dictionary  definition of "whimsy" is apparently, "Unusual funny and pleasant ideas or qualities", by the way, if you're into that sort of thing). Maybe even, if you're up for it, and whisper this softly...joy...

The "how" also fell into place after that. Try as I might (and gosh, did I try) everything I draw, make or design make comes back to line and wash watercolour, just like those bluebells. It's a fun, whimsical and joyful medium though, so I guess it fits in pretty well. ;-).

The What and the Where

Which just leaves the "What" and the "Where,". So, as I said, the hiatus isn't really over, and it might be a little while before I post again. 

(And if you have any ideas about the "What and the Where" of the way forward-please let me know on Instagram, where I'm planning to get back to a very gentle posting routine again).

Hello there

Well, this image says it all, really. Here in London, it actually feels like spring (well, for this week, anyway :-). And so, in place of my planned post, I thought I'd share the joy of this cute rabbit... Tap or click on the image, or here, if you'd like to do the same.

The story here...

The story is simple. Earlier today, I was about to start on the planned post, when I had an irresistible urge to enjoy the sunshine...And then to take out my sketchbook...And half an hour or so later, (time may have warped a little as I sketched ;-),  this cute bunny  had appeared. 

Amazingly, though utterly unplanned, this rabbit is also  just in time for the Spring Equinox, which is on March 20th this year, I believe.

So you get to have this little cutie, at pretty much the same time as me. Which means I haven't had chance to "do anything with" this image yet (though will post links if and when that happens).

Previous rabbits and bunnies...

If you've been here a while though, you'll know that plenty of cute rabbits and bunnies have appeared in this blog over the years already. Such as the ones in Easter sheets and kit available here and here.

A New Snowdrop Illustration

Hello there, and I hope any holidays you've had/are still having have been exactly how you needed them to be.

Ours were not at all as we'd planned, as not long after I'd scheduled the previous post, we learnt that my father-in-law, Mike had died. He was a good soul, whose quiet, calm presence, dry sense of humour and endless patience will be much missed.

But...

But having said that, he was also, until his last years at least, a good and enthusiastic photographer and card designer himself. So Mike, with huge thanks to all your support of my artistic (and other!) efforts, and appreciation of the details that make a difference...this image is dedicated to you, with lots of love.

And yes, it's a bright image, because even though Mike himself was on the quieter side, he never missed a chance to appreciate (and often photograph) colour in nature. Some of my best memories of him involve going round various gardens, and us  noticing, talking about and photographing plants, including the exotic ones at Kew Gardens.

This flower also feels like a symbol of hope for the future, which is what I'm sure he'd want us all to have.

 Please bear with me over the next few weeks, as blog postings may have different timings and frequency until the end of January.

And if you're new to the blog-welcome-and I promise that 99% of my posts are much more uplifting than this one.

On that note, let's all make it a Happy New Year, no matter what.

Hello there

Hope you're doing well, however the winter season is appearing for you.

Here, I'm behind, as ever. But I've realised (and not for the first time) that our good old home printer can be my friend. In other words, fear not, because even if traditional Christmas cards may or may not get to you in time to send, you can print, make and send the printable variety for a good while yet (assuming that you're reading this close to the date I'm typing, in early December).

So, it seems like high-time to showcase one of my newest designs first: Holly and Roses. Great to cut out and send as it is, or with added layers featuring the floral jug, the sheet itself also includes a blank tag to cover the "Merry Christmas," message, if you'd rather say something else.

(And yes, if you're eagle-eyed, and have been reading this blog for a while, you might notice that whilst the holly in this design is new this season, I've been waiting a while to find just the right place for a variation on that  jug of roses and lilies...)
