An Accidental Series of Watercolours...

Image shows nine watercolour-based images of different kinds of Christmas foliage, in reds, greens and gold. Each image is on a rectangular A7 piece of paper, with deckled edges.
New Christmas watercolours ready
 to become gift tags...

Hello there

It's a busy time of year for many, so this will be a quick post.

Just wanted to share these cute little watercolours with you before they go on their way as gift tags. Painting them helped me feel a ton more festive, so hope they can do the same for you, if you're feeling the need for that.

And, it seems, I was soooo focused during the painting of them that I *completely* failed even  to notice a squally storm outside the window, (even though I have *really* good hearing). According to the Computer Man,  the sudden storm had been howling and rattling at our front and back windows. And I completely believe him, but share this as a happy tale of the power of art to transport a person completely into their own happiest world.

When I'd finished I didn't just learn about the storm...But I also realised that a milestone I've been "trying" to achieve for ages (creating a proper series of traditionally painted watercolours) had come about effortlessly...because I'd just been thinking of them as "gift tags".

Next week

Next week will be my final post before Christmas. And I'm already working on it, because gifts and goodies for you will be the order of the day. In the meantime, have a great week, and thank you so much for being here.

More soon.

New Poinsettia Florals, and Yup, Sales...

Image shows a festive red and green Christmas card design, the main feature of which is a basket or trough of red and green poinsettia plants, sepicted in digital watercolour
Click or tap here to see/buy this at

Hello there

If you're feeling that you've *already* heard enough talk of sales. then please feel absolutely free just to enjoy this week's bright and cheerful watercolour poinsettias.

If you *are* into sales...

If you *are* into sales, then it would be remiss of me not to mention that:

(For instance, these poinsettias especially suit greeting cards and Christmas ornaments, ;-) ).

Update on Dec 1st 2025-my Craftsuprint sale has now ended.

♥ For crafters-all my main poinsettia design sheets are already 20% off , *and*

♥ Redbubble, Zazzle and Spoonflower discounts and sales may still be buzzing about, but utterly beyond my control.

I did though, want to show you the alternative design option for these poinsettias, which I'm really liking on, eg:

Image is a photo of a hanging tote bag, patterned all-over with a large loose water red and green poinsettias on gold pattern.

Image shows a slightly rippling fabric bearing the loose watercolour red and green poinsettia design described above.

And finally...

And there you have it. Thank you so much for reading down this far.

I'll just wish you a great week, whatever you end up doing with it.

More soon-of the distinctly non-salesy variety.

Hello there

Just popping in to show you "Festive Wishes", a gently Christmas/seasonal/winter/holiday/ whatever-you-call-it-in your part of the world, painting that celebrates Winter Anemones (the flowers are also known as "Christmas Roses").

Seasonal but natural, I have to confess that I'm a bit in love with this one, and hope you will be too.

Update on Nov 12th: If this grabs you too, it's now available as part of a download here.

In any event, hope this brings some floral joy to your day, and there'll be more about it (with extra downloads) in my next post.

In any event, thanks so much for being here.

More soon.

Announcing...The Festive Christmas Holiday Robins and Berries Collection

Image shows how a quilt design might look if made from the 25 various red, dark green, silver and white fabrics from the "Festive Robins and Berries " Collection
My "Festive Christmas Holiday Robins and Berries
 Collection" available now on Spoonflower

Hello there

It's that time of year again. When I make a post that will delight some (who may be wondering what took me so long to get around to it) and annoy others (who may not wish to see this kind of thing until December 1st at the earliest).

There are good reasons for this

For those in the latter camp, please bear with me. But as this is, above all,  a collection of co-ordinating designs for on-demand printing onto fabric and wallpaper, I really do need to post this now, so that people who want to make things (or plan special festive decor) have a chance to do so before the actual main event.

Image is a photo of a table with fruit, and the table runner on it is a dark green fabric covered with a modern red berry and grey stalk hand drawn botanical pattern.
"Festive Red Berries and Silver Grey Branches
 on Dark Green," Table Runner

Plus, as I type, Spoonflower says there's a discount of up to 30% on purchases made at the moment (discounts being applied at checkout, as far as I can see). If it's gone by the time you click this, it's not false urgency-obviously, I just have no control at all over Spoonflower's  sale schedule.

Image shows bright red-pink napkins and cutlery. the napkins have a grey botanical trailing leaf and berry pattern on them too.
Festive grey on pink red botanical napkins,
available on Spoonflower.

Either way, I can say, hand on heart, that I put a *lot* of work into making this the best it could be. So whilst there are main showstopper type patterns, there are also less busy ones, very simple blender designs, and even solid colours like this pinky-red, so that if you're seeking a plain, exact match with other colours in the designs (eg for quilting) you should be able to find it.

There's fun, too...

If you're wondering how I designed the main picture for this post, no, I haven't suddenly become a quilt designer. It's just that Spoonflower's own tools for seeing how designs might look as a set of festive dinner napkins,

Image shows twelve squares, each bearing a pattern from the Festive Christmas Holiday Robins and berries Collection, in shades of red-pink, dark blue-green, white and silver grey.
Napkin collection mock-up, created
using Spoonflower's "Fill a Yard Tool"

Image shows four lengths of fabric laid out ready to form an infinity scarf, each bearing a pattern from the Festive Christmas Holiday Robins and Berries Collection, in shades of red-pink, dark blue-green, white and silver grey.
Infinity Scarf Fabric Lengths mock-up, created
using Spoonflower's "Fill a Yard Tool"

for example, are *really* easy to use, and massive fun.

Finally

If all this isn't your thing, thank you so much for bearing with me. And you never know, as Spoonflower does make items on demand as well as sell fabrics, you might yet know someone, later in the year, who'd love a robin tea towel, for example ;-).

Image shows a tea towel, with a dark blue-green background, upon which robins, each red, white and silver, are set in a half-drop pattern, Each robin is surrounded by his or her own spray of red berries with silver-grey branches.

available on Spoonflower

Thank you

In any event, thank you so much for reading down this far, and I really appreciate your being here.

More soon, and on a totally different topic, I promise.

Bits, Bobs and Two Unexpected Visitors...

Hello there, and as ever, hope that life is treating you well.

Now, this is the time when you get to peep behind the curtain, and see how creativity really works, instead of the, "yes, one-neat-product-appears-every-week," version of events into which this blog might (accidentally) have lulled you before now.

line and wash digital watercolour sketch of a sunny park garden bench with wisteria around it.

First up, there's a park/garden  bench sketch. I drew it mostly to celebrate humble-but-wonderful  benches in the sun, and a vague idea that, when finished,  it might one day join what I might (in a grandiose moment) call the "garden art series,"...The start of which is in my Society6 shop, at least for now.

Line and wash digital watercolour sketch of a ball of pink roses on top of a be-ribboned pole.
"Roses on a Pole"

in Rebelle 5, by Clare Walker

Next there's these roses-on-a-pole. The start of a wedding design? Maybe. Something for May Day? It could happen. But they got created because they were fun and reminded me of summer on a rainy day. Which is much more in line with how creativity really works than the "uploading-on-a-schedule," online world might suggest.

And then there's this post itself. For a perfect Easter post, in a world of productivity-over-creativity, there should be bouncing bunnies or similar. (And yes,  it's with some relief that I can announce that there'll be a more "correctly" seasonal post (if you want to call it that) *next* week.

Those Two Unexpected Visitors...

But if I had gone along with that particular script this week, then some real life inspiration which landed in the window box,  three feet away from my keyboard, wouldn't have got a look-in, almost literally.

Let me introduce you to the first of them. Both these photos were taken by my husband, so massive thanks to him (a.k.a. often on this blog  as, "The Computer Man").

Photo of a very round robin on a window box.
Round Robin-Photo by Jim Fernbank

Yes, it's a robin. That most famous of Christmas birds (in the UK, anyway), gracing us with his presence (like the snow of  a couple of weeks ago) much closer to Easter.

I had a vague memory from childhood that robins like to eat tiny pieces of cheese.

That turned out to be the understatement of the century. He clearly *adored* cheese. And soon had us trained to leave out cheese for him in response to loud and disappointed squeaks each morning.

But the cheese kept disappearing *so* quickly, that we became suspicious. And sure enough, a second, sleeker robin is also dining at the window-box buffet.

Photo of a more svelte robin bird on a window box.
Sleek Robin- Photo by Jim Fernbank

Which, combined with the fairly recent memory of snow, now meant that a snowy Christmas design just had to be begun, at least, even though you might not see a final, end result,  "on" something, for months.

Line and wash digital watercolour work in progress sketch, featuring a red robin in the snow.
Red Robin Sketch
Work in progress digital watercolour

(And yes, I know that my robin sketch features a red bird, and these robins are distinctly orange. But I'll save that debate (and the huge, bizarre, difference in popularity between robin designs in each colour) for a post nearer Christmas.

It's *all* OK...

Thanks for reading down this far. This post has rather wandered and wound its way round, a bit like how creativity itself seems to work. Am hoping that it's been fun to read, and that it might explain why things don't or can't always seem to appear, "When they *should*".

Most of all, I hope that it may have inspired you to follow through on creative ideas, whenever and however they appear for you. It's all *OK,* and you, I, or anyone else, all have permission to follow those inner-and outer-promptings, as they happen.

Even if that does mean that you draw robins at Easter :-) .

That's all for now. But my current plan is to be back a little sooner next week, with some genuinely spring-like or Eastery treats.

More soon.

A Christmas Cartoon Ecard

Hello there

And now it really *is" that time of year again, and this year's Christmas ecard is below. As with them every year, feel free to use and share it if you wish (though am not sure if its topic will resonate in other places as much as the UK-do you have strikes at the moment too, where you are?).

In this cartoon, even Santas's reindeer are on strike and are demanding more pay, and extra carrots.
Click, right-click or tap here to download this ecard.

In any event, enjoy the festive season, wherever and however it is for you.

I'll be taking a break from blogging now until the New Year, but have some posts already scheduled for you for after Christmas too.

Most of all, thank you for reading all these posts, and for being here.

Christmas Foliage Graphics...and a Quiz

Hello there

Hope you're well and thriving, and ready for some fun, as well as a not one, not two, but three freebies to download, as befits the approaching festive season.

You're welcome to use any of the set of three graphics in this post, in any way at all that matches my angel policy. Just right-click, tap or click (depending upon your device) on the graphic(s) you'd like to use, and the graphic should download.

And if you're not in need of freebies right now...as well as if you are, this post is also a quiz.

Christmas Foliage Watercolour 2
Picture 2: Right-click, tap or click here to download

Each of the pics in this post was created in a different way. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to decide which method (A, B or C) matches which Picture 1, Picture 2 and Picture 3.

Free Christmas Foliage Watercolour Picture 3
Picture 3: Right-click, tap or click here to download.

Painting and Drawing Methods Used

Which of these methods do you think matches which picture? (You may have to scroll up  from here to see the pictures again).

Method A One of the pictures in this post was created using 100% digital watercolour painting and digital ink sketching,  in the wonderful Rebelle 5 app, (not an affiliate link, I just enjoy using it).

Method B One of the pictures was created by wetting hot-pressed, (ie smooth) 300g Bockingford Watercolour paper, splashing colours into wet areas, and then, when the areas were dry, inking in details with a black waterproof pen.

Method C One of the pictures in this post was created by sketching onto 300g cold-pressed Bockingford Watercolour Paper first, and then painting in details wet-on-dry (though white highlights were still added later).

Your answers

When you think you have your answers, check the PS at the bottom of this post, to see if you're right.

Please note, this quiz is just for fun, there are no prizes, and the answers are at the very bottom of this post, in the P.S. section.

Whilst I'm in the business of making sure that there's enough text here to obscure the answers, this is probably a great point to remind you that my Redbubble shop is still a great place to look for gifts (most still in time for Christmas, or of course, any other time of year), and that  the printable designs in my Craftsuprint shop can be downloaded 365 days a year.

With that said, I hope you had fun with this post today, and/or found something you wanted in one way or another. It's only left for me to wish you a happy week, and promise that there will be more from me soon as well as...

A P.S with the quiz answers...

And the answers are:

Picture 1 was painted using method B. The surface is smooth (ie hot pressed) and the end result has a pretty sploshy wet-in-wet look.

Picture 2 was painted using method A, and is therefore, 100% digitally painted, (even though the digital paper behind it has a really convincing rougher/"cold-pressed paper" look).

Which means that Picture 3 used method C, with its rougher paper and penwork that am feeling now might have been a little over-the-top :-) .

Whatever your answers, hope you had fun, and see you next week.

Driving Gnome for Christmas...

Hello there-hope you're having a great week.

It's definitely time for some silliness, whimsy, and quite possibly the worst pun I've ever inflicted upon anyone....In the form of the new "Driving Gnome for Christmas," design...

This Card in CHristmas red and white features a watercolour gnome who's driving, and the caption, "Driving Gnome for Christmas".
Buy and customise this card on Zazzle...

If you like the gnome but not the caption, you can customise it as much as you'd like by clicking here.

And if you'd like some red and white whimsy that's quite a lot more subtle, the gnome theme turns into red and white paisley-type patterns in my Redbubble shop.

To see what I mean, take a look at the pattern on:

Ever-popular cushions and pillows...

An apron that could really kick off some festivities...

A nifty alternative to the Santa sack...

A great gift for any gnome-lover with an Iphone...
(What an interesting Venn diagram that would be...)

Or a stylish alternative to the Christmas jumper...

Hope that these spark some ideas for you, or in any event, make you smile.

Onto something very different in the next post, I promise.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like...A Great Debate?

Hello there.

And as you an probably tell from the distinctly festive picture below, it's that time of year again.

No, not the time of year for Christmas itself, but the *contentious * time of year. That time of year in which the super-organised (I salute you, really I do) have all their lists under control, and are champing at the bit to begin, or even to finish, their Christmas shopping...And the rest of us...aren't.

So, you may be thinking, as someone who clearly identifies with the second group, why oh why would I be peppering this post with images of new Christmas card designs...in early November? Have I turned into an ultra-cynical marketer? (Before we go anywhere else on this, let me say to that last one, I so very much hope not).

I certainly always used to be the sort of person who never thought about Christmas at all until December 1st. That was, in part, a bid to keep things feeling seasonal special (if you know anything about me from the BoundingSquirrel Blog, it is, after all, that I love a bit of seasonally-appropriate art, and actually, historically anyway, have found it really difficult to create items which feel seasonally different to the prevailing vibe around me).

Am also very aware that lots of people celebrate wholly other festivals, or prefer to lead a celebratory life day-by-day, rather than one centred around any festivals at all.

Why think about Christmas now?

This though, is a distinct disadvantage to being a designer who puts Christmas off, in a world in which:

 a) The aforementioned wonderously-organised people also live,

 b)  The design industry routinely asks people to design for Christmas in July, if not earlier (there is documentary footage from a "How do they make that" type of TV programme that was on last year here in the UK,  showing the people in the Woodmansterne factory doing just that...I salute them, too),

c) Department stores open their Christmas shops in September,

d) People may need to order by post (as with print-on-demand cards from Zazzle) and supply chains and postal services across the globe are are, shall we say, not as robust as they used to be, and

e) Anyone making cards to sell (which you can absolutely do if you print out the card sheets sold in my Craftsuprint shop, by the way) needs time to make and sell them before Christmas,

f) Shopping earlier can often be cheaper,

g) I've experienced people saying, "I would love to have bought your cards, but they came out too late for this year," one too many times., and...

h) Above all, Christmas is supposed to be about peace, love and joy, and having any excuse to spread those around can never be a bad thing, can it?

A peaceful solution

So, in the interests of bringing some of that peace to this great debate (OK, I know it's a minor one really, but let's start somewhere, hey?) I propose a solution as follows.

I make this one post now, so that all you lovely, wonderously-organised people know that you can find all these cards to customise here, and to make from sheets you print out, here.

And then...

Picture of the 14 illustrated watercolour Christmas card sheets, backgrounds, embellishment and verse sheets that make up this mix 'n match kit.
*Starry Christmas* Mix and Match Christmas Bumper Kit

And then, though I might reference the upcoming season or post some pics about new designs that happen to be on the drawing board (after all, it's good to share excitement and joy, right?) I'll do my best to ensure that the blog posts talk about lots of other lovely things instead.

Update November 10th 2022: It turns out that quite a lot of people who like it here are wanting Christmas designs right now. Which is something of a relief, as that's most of that which I'm working on at the memoment.

So, I'll be posting simply that which I've done and is there to be shared, from now on, if that's OK with you.

More soon.

PS. Thanks also for reading down this far!

Snow Cottage Christmas Card in line and wash watercolour
Click or tap here for details about this design

Hello there

Hope you're doing well (and beating the heat, if that is affecting you too).
Though things are fresher now, but this week's post came from a big need to cool off around these parts.

"What better way to do that," I thought, "than to offer some more Christmas designs..."

So, the "Snowy Cottage," you see above  was a welcome refuge from the heat (as was the insert sheet that goes with it). It's based on a line-and-wash traditional watercolour of mine, with added digital glitter effects in the background.

Christmas in July, for 30% off...

But to bring in even more that's cool  (in all senses) I hope, **** from July 22nd-29th 2022*** I'm running a 30% discount on 12 of my best-selling Christmas designs.

Perfect if you want to make cards for sale at autumn fairs, grab a bargain...or just fancy cooling off with some more snowy fun. You can see and buy everything on sale by clicking or tapping here.

Happy Christmas-in-July!

This Year's Christmas ECard Solves a Mystery...

Hello there, and as we're now officially in the second half of December, reckon I can say it... Happy Christmas.

As ever, there's a Christmas Ecard for you to enjoy (and send on to others if you wish).

This year, an ongoing Christmas mystery for many of us is finally solved in this ecard...

Free Christmas ecard cartoon gif, in which Rudolph has flashing fairy lights on his antlers, Santa looks exasperated, and the caption reads: Suddenly, it had become very obvious just why the fairy lights were always tangled when it was time to put them up each year...
You are welcome to share this ecard with others.
Just click, tap or right click, depending on your device, to download

It's also the time of year when all of us (me included) tend to get focused elsewhere, and even consider taking a breather for a few days (gosh).

This will be happening here too...I'll almost certainly be posting things here before the New Year, but won't be on a regular schedule again until January.

So, just wanted to send you love and thanks for all your support this year, and very best wishes for the festive season and beyond, however you celebrate it, or not.

And, as ever, more soon.

Holly and Christmas Trees Wrapping Paper Sheets

Hello there.

You may not believe it, but apparently I am already late in posting designs for Christmas.

In an attempt to remedy this, have just posted a new set of three sheets of Christmas/holiday wrapping paper that's fun and full of foliage, but versatile (yes, you could also use this in craft projects).

What's more, it looks as if it has 20% off until the end of today-Friday 19th Nov 2021.

Hope this helps and is fun for you.

Christmas in July: Free Holly Clip Art

Hello there. After a break last week am back and offering as you do in the middle of summer (as it is here)...Christmas in July.

Handpainted Watercolour Holly Christmas Clip Art With Splattered Dots
Free Watercolour Holly Clip Art

Now, if you're new to the blog, this may or may not be a head -scratcher.

But if you've been reading for a while, then you'll know that as I like to join in with the whole "Christmas in July," movement, and offer a freebie to any person who's so amazingly organised that they're looking for Christmas supplies already.

Hence, today's offering is a hand-painted watercolour PNG holly sprig.

You're welcome simply to download and use them by right-clicking, tapping or clicking on the image (depending on your device). My angel policy explains the many ways you can use them.

(By the way, if you're reading this and it's not July, then of course, you can download this just the same at any time of year).

And if you'd  like to see this holly "in action", as it were, on some ready-designed craft supplies, then there's a DL-sized card front here, matching inserts (and verses) here, and an ultra-versatile patterned Christmas holly background here.

And with that, I'm off to enjoy the sunshine. As you do, in London, when you've just completed a  Christmassy holly sprig in July... :-)

Hope all's well with you, and have a great weekend.

More soon.

Christmas Snowmen Cartoon (and Day 99/100)

Christmas Snowmen cartoon, in which one snowman is dubious about having been given a fitness watch for Christmas...

Yes, it's Christmas Eve, and yes, am owning up to the fact that, I drew this Christmas-themed cartoon ahead of time. In any event, hope you enjoy it, and your day.

PS. This card is available at CartoonsbyClare at Zazzle, but obviously, you're looking at it for 2021 and beyond by now ;-) .

Day 98/100: Two Things Today...

Originally, today's post was going to be a video run-through of some of the things that have been visited the most on BoundingSquirrel this year.

And then I ended up sketching (or attempting to sketch) this variegated holly in watercolour and pen. It turns out that getting the creamy edges to show up really well is quite the challenge, so will give this another go at a later date.

In the meantime,  if you'd rather watch the video instead, you still can. It seems that the most whimsical illustrations came out on top this year.

Day 91: Alternative Christmas Colourways

Hope you're well. If you're reading this in "real time", we've come to the point when Christmas normally takes over and reading blogs isn't uppermost in most people's minds.

So, if you're actually here, thanks so much...

Watercolour drawing of a parcel in pink and gold

And whenever your reading this, this time of year (when it's too late to offer anything for this Christmas, but everything feels soooo Christmassy) gives me a fabulous freedom to experiment. With things that might work for next Christmas. With tutorials I've wanted to try out at other times of year...And with new ideas that might (or might not) take firmer root next year.

Watercolour drawing of bells in pink and gold.

So, in that spirit of exploration, here in this post are three Christmassy drawing in pink and gold watercolour and pen...This is a a colour pairing I love, and would so love to use more at Christmas, but which isn't often seen as "commercial"...

Free Christmas Wreath Printable (Day 90/100)

Hello again. Hope you're well and thriving in the very best way possible at this time.

Today, I started playing around with the clipart elements from Day 81, and wanted to demonstrate how versatile they can be.

They turned into this printable Christmas wreath...

Christmas wreath with hand-drawn fir, hplly and ribbon elements

Which it seems only fair to offer to you as a free printable because a) the elements of it are free and b) It's Christmas (or almost so).

So you're welcome to use it in line with the normal angel policy here. If you'd like to, just right click and save, or click, or tap, depending upon your device.

More tomorrow.

Free "Merry Christmas" Web Graphic (and day 89/100)

Merry Christmas in snowy hand-drawn letters with a robin

Hello there, and hope all's well with you. Today's offering is this quick little doodle in Krita, born of an experiment with drawing "snowy" letters.

It isn't big enough to look good for printing, but if you want to use it for your website or similar, feel free (click, right-click or tap and save accordingly, depending on your device).

As ever, credit and a link back here is *greatly* appreciated, but never required.

More tomorrow!
